Mainspring size, what do you think...

Post by djolemag »

Hi to all,
looking right now at Cousins, checking for price of mainspring for UT/ETA 6497/8 movements...
Desired size is 1.50x0.175x440x14.5
Now take a good look,
article GR4307 cost almost twice less than GR43071 (which is declared for ETA/UT).
Now what is a difference, I couldn't find it?
Also, I think next one 1.50x0.175x480x14.5 could fit into barrel...

That's really odd, I wonder what the difference could be?

480 sounds long, 420 and 440 are around standard.

Yup, same question in my mind... Even 480 could fit since diameter is 14.5... But I don't see the difference between gr4307 and 43071...

I did some googling and came up empty. Those part numbers seem to be specific to Cousins. I would fire them an email, no sense spending more if you don't need to.

Know nothing about mainsprings but a little about online retailing...It is interesting that the higher priced item is listed as a "best seller" and has a much more robust inventory. Of course these fields could be manipulated, but ostensibly they indicate there's a meaningful difference which Cousins has done a poor job of highlighting. Agree with Blue, I would call and ask.

Order one of each and see if there is a difference. If not then stock up on the cheaper one's.

I would assume that ETA parts are becoming increasingly difficult to order and that prices will rise because ETA decided not to sell anymore outside Swatch group.
Cousins is suing ETA for that move in Switzerland already for at least two years.
This is why many smaller watchmaking companies now are using Sellita and the like.
IMHO yet another cartel forming of a Swiss (watch) company.
