Hoarding vs. collecting

Post by Yoda »

I have been thinking about whether I am a hoarder or a collector.

A collector is a person who, per definition, has more than three of something.

A hoarder is someone who never gets enough.

I am a collector, and as such I have many things and stuff.
I have done this before, to name one thing I had tons of Hamilton 10 size movements and in the end I decided to sell all and only keep one of each model plus a few essential parts in case something went wrong. Hm, except for the calibre 923....aiming at teasing RGM at some point. LOL!

I have decided to go down that very same road with my SF240 parts and movements, keep one of each and some essential parts - just in case.

Tan's recent sales post made me make up my mind, I get funds and more people will be able to get a SF240, or parts.

I just need to clear a few things before I can make it happen.

I’m a hoarder in remission.... want to be a collector

Cutting down from more to 3-4. That said, when I do find a project to restore, I do buy that for therapy. Profit isn’t as important as the therapy I get from working on these and hopefully selling these for a reasonable price to the forum. I love seeing 240s and other special movements in builds.

I realize that I need funds, I think that I have a quarter of a million SEK tied up in my shop, not healthy.

Regarding the SF240s, I am ashamed to admit that I possibly can match Jobz/Madantique easily when it comes to the movements, but mine came to me as a lot/parts.

A little of both is fine....hoarding is stockpiling unrealized potential. Its good as long as you do something with parts.

I think a hoarder is someone who buys things because he wants to have them just in case they might come in handy one day, and does so often. If one buys things with the intent to use them and ends up with a huge stash of stuff because the projects just didn't happen, then that is just accidental hoarding IMO.

Also, a collector will have his stuff displayed all over the place. A hoarders collection will be stashed all over the place where even he doesn't remember where he put a lot of it. As an anecdote, a friend of mine is a hoarder - he once found a small TV in the basement and was really puzzled as to where it came from . It was brand new in a sealed box.

yup ... I am an accidental hoarder ... I have parts, cases, dials and movements that are most likely not worth what I paid for back in the day.

One example is the Little Hero Crown Guard! anyone here ever bought one of those? if you frequented the Rep forums, you know what i'm talking about  :(
