Case Clamps for this Movement?

Post by Gatchaman »

Guys, this 6498 case has me stumped. Other than trying to find a compression ring, how would you affix this movement to the case? The clips are too large as the screw hole butts up against that plate there.

1). Small tab that you can screw in pivot into the case groove and tighten.
2). A wider head screw that is notched so that it can wedge against the case groove

2 possible solutions I have tried in the past. I can’t tell from your pics what might work.

I've had this problem on the last three projects with Unita movements. I had to downsize the clips and the two screws.

Agree with above you may have to make a groove in the side of the ring/case for a shorter tab.

No chance the CB will hold the mvmt in place?

I trimmed standard size tabs with a pair of heavy duty wire cutters. Worked great.

I managed to find clips that worked. But if I tightened them down too much, the movement would stop. I torqued a little less. All good now. Case is sold. Movement is ticking away nicely.

Thank you to all for your assistance and knowledge.

Forgot to mention... I put together a mono watch. It's weird. I dunno if I'll ever get used to seeing just one hand on a dial that shows all 12hrs with 5 minute divisions instead of seconds! I'll post pics soon.

The easiest way to solve the mounting screws/tabs problem is to remove the barrel bridge and file out the places that the screws go so that the crescent shaped area is enlarged all the way through instead of just on the top like it is. I use a round file to do this. The problem is that with the ETA movements the mounting screw can screw down all the way to the pillar (base) plate and on the older Unitas movements it can't due to the extra material in the spot marked in red. The modern Chinese cases are designed for the ETA versions of the 6497, not the Unitas. It's a small difference and not hard to fix.

I was going to attempt to file the extra "ledge" off but that would involved disassembly of the movement. I didn't want to do that.
