Don't know about sewing machine mate, i do it all by hand, as it was made back in the days of the decima mas. But there is a lot of forums out there and you will surely find what you need. Good Luck with your questmaz wrote:Hi there! I'm new at leatherwork and was looking for some tips for beginners. Before, I did machine and hand embroidery, but now I'm interested in leatherwork.
A little about what I want to do. I am going to do purses and gloves. I may sell them when my skill is up. I wanted to ask where should I start. I've decided to begin with choosing a machine for leather. I found a few reviews of sewing machines for leather
This website says how to choose a sewing machine www.techsew.com/us/blog/how-to-pick-the ... chine.html.
I also found a list best of sewing machines for leather. Some of them suit beginners https://www.craftyhangouts.com/best-sew ... r-leather/.
Honestly, I am confused with such an amount of info.
I'll appreciate any advice.
Many thanks.

Issued straps from Panerai were in fact machine stitched. After they got damaged, the navy replaced them with hand-sewn straps.Nottingham wrote: ↑December 23rd, 2021, 1:37 amDon't know about sewing machine mate, i do it all by hand, as it was made back in the days of the decima mas. Yep, and why, because machines can't reproduce the saddle Stitch. Saddle Stitch is way stronger than machine stitching because each Stitch is tied and allows each Stitch to resist even if one of them is broken. Whereas on machine stitching, if one is broken the rest will soon unstitch! Long live the handmade!Emilio wrote:Issued straps from Panerai were in fact machine stitched. I bought a old singer 31K15 which able to stitch thick leather, It's really efficient, stong and simple as an vintage panerai. However I'm still only made saddle handstitch. If you plan to make gloves and purses you could be limited by a classic stitching machine (whit a flat area VS arm)
On my pictures only the slippers are made with a stitching machine.

Most of my favorite straps are crafted using leather from the Horween tannery - some of the highest quality you can find.
To make it more affordable you can buy offcuts / remnant pieces from on line resources such as - https://leather4craft.co.uk/product-category/horween-2/
Here are a few examples of my Horween straps made by Cordes:

If your in the US go to an antique mall more so the ones in like the western states and look for cowboy chaps they are cheap the leather is of the correct thickness and usualy the correct color. You can even find them in eBay but its hit and miss as you cannot handle the hide in person.

Occasionally I buy old leather weekender from the bay but it’s really hit or miss.
The following strap was a hit and I made it thick at the lugs, so called vintage folding. Hope the links will work.

Hello friends! For vintage straps, I mostly use WW2 military ammunition leather.
Unfortunately, it is very rare to find leather in good condition.
The last two of my works are straps made from a German pouch and a Soviet officer's tablet from WW2.
