My gf had to teach some "grown up" teenagers how to play hide and seek, literally.

They were on vacation at the country side and discovering "new" things to do like that.

Or maybe we were just smarter using our brains more to figure things out lol actually going to the library to read volumes upon volumes of books to write a paper and all haha just kidding, today’s kids are smart in ways I guess I never will be

Forget calculators, I was tought to use an abacus.

As for the boring part; hell no it wasn't. And a really huge bonus: hardly anyone was overweight. I get so sad looking at todays kids; many of them get winded from climbing up three flights of stairs but then again, they're always eating something! We used to race up the stairs to the tenth floor. And the worst part is that the school, social media etc. are all teaching them that it's OK, and that it's normal to sweat from walking...

There is one thing to consider... Paperwork is much harder than reading pdf. Learning time is slowet but knowledge is persistent, compared to pdf gained which is short term...
Check yourself :
You will always remember page number in book where important information is placed... Try the same with pdf or some website address

Abacus was used in first grade, of course... Calculators were forbidden through whole my schooling, except for physics classes in high school, just due to economical time handling... Hence, if you don't know the formula and theory behind, no use of calc...
Also, as you said, we all were slim and fit, playing outside for a whole day...
From this distance, that past has extraordinary charm...

I hate to say this but:

- we, the people who look back and say it was better back in the day, are to blame of today's situation. At least about how our children play, live, etc.

- even the ancient Romans said the same about their "new" tendencies. So each period has its ups and downs.

Well that it probably true but it makes me feel old to admit it. The one consolation is that he looks at my old analogue watches and has started pestering me for a watch like them (so perhaps he will be forced to learn to tell the time after all).
