Re: tall tube heat blue hands for 3646
Just a question for you gentlemen. What do you consider tall? Measured from the bottom surface of the hand to the end of the tube? Hour hand? Minute hand? Thickness of hand?
For example a gen minute hand of 0.40mm hand thickness with a 0.25mm tube length. Total thickness of hand at the head of the hand 0.65mm.
What measurements are you looking for?

Sorry, I didn't mention in the post that I'm interested in hands for Unitas 6497/8bmsm wrote: ↑January 23rd, 2020, 3:08 pm I have NW 616 blue heated hands that I’m not going to use. The inner ring is loose but since you are going to make make them tall tube, I think that it won’t be a problem for you.
If you want them I can make $20+shipping. You can ask Yoda about the hands because he was going to broached them.
I’m not going to use them and they will be lost in a drawer.

I take as the basis the dimensions of hands from Athaya (Tube height (+/- mm) : H = 2.6, M = 3.0, S = 2.0)

That is crazy long. That is measured from the bottom of the hand?
I think if the hands were made from the proper material that will blue, you will run into other problems.
The hand holes will need to be (re-) broached after heat bluing due to the most likely distortion of the tubes.
Wouldn't it be easier to modify the CP and HW?

This prospect of this definitly scares me...
Couldnt the process of soldering mess up the blueing on the steel?
I would almost rather solder the tall tubes from the nw/athaya hands onto the CP and HW, then it's just business as usual with the flat hands.
Or just dont solder anything and have a friction fit. When you take the hands off either the hand separates from the tube or the tube from the cp/hw, either way the hands come off and the goal is accomplished.

Yes. Blue color will be affected at 290-300°. Soldering with soft solder can be done at 180-190°. It's not so scaring experience if you use a soldering-iron with temp adjusting.

The tallest sets H3 I have seen are 3mm, that's not enough. https://www.ebay.com/itm/HOUR-WHEEL-CAN ... 2254576576binbin wrote: ↑January 24th, 2020, 1:23 pm That is crazy long. That is measured from the bottom of the hand?

I need a set of H4 (HOUR WHEEL 3mm and CANNON PINION 4mm) But I didn't see them in the sale.
