For 3646 I prefer solid caseback, because they never made gen opb cases for them as far as I know. Also with no view of the movement and no sub dial to worry about you really dont need to be OCD and use an expensive movement.

For newer case designs when the opb case back were actually used on the gens, I choose display caseback and aim for accurate details. Especially since the later models used these gorgeous 240s, I need to be able to drool over the movement every time I pick up the watch.

-My in progress RP 3646 will have a solid caseback and a6497
-My esdee cali 3646 has solid caseback and swiss 6498
-My 6154 rolerai has a display caseback with DSN 618
-My future welded lug will have a display caseback with fully converted Inca star 240.
-My NW 6152/1 has a display caseback with fully converted incabloc 240
-My incoming titanium EGI has a display caseback with 190. (This one is inherently a fantasy build seeing as how the titanium case has inaccurate lugs anyway, and obviously the 190 was never used in the gen models. In the end I decided that the coolness factor of using the 190 outweighed my desire for the watch to be accurate)

Anyway; for what it's worth, this is how I decided to rationalize my build decisions.

Debate: Solid versus display casebacks

Post by civic4982 »

I always like having a few spare display casebacks especially if I’m splurging big bucks for a movement like an sf240 or even a Rolex and Cortebert movement.

It’s always just nice to gaze at the mechanics in the backside.

That said, all my 3646 have appropriately finished solid and display casebacks as do my sf240 watches. My 6154 and Mille Metri have simply solid case backs but I like them that way.

I like the decisions you came to on yours.

I've grown to like both.

My mistake. I only bought the display case backs for my Esdee Type "c" first release and Type "d" and Type "f" second release.

Anyone have any spare solid case backs for the above cases?

In the rare instances when I want to see or show the movement it takes a few seconds to unscrew the caseback. I’m happy just knowing that the cool vintage engine is under the hood, just as I would be if I owned a vintage Porsche 356.

If I took the hood off my 550 Spyder, all you would see is a souped up VW. Lol.

VW engines are beautiful in their simplicity. Many years ago a friend and I got a 1968 Porsche 911 as a project and investment. It basically had a VW engine upgraded a bit. Gorgeous. Not a lot of power but that car was so fun to drive; power wasn’t the point. I feel the same about these watches. A modern $5 quartz movement is more accurate but that isn’t the point is it?

Display! I came to this hobby through fascination of mechanical movements. That's why I cannot stop looking at them

You know, I dont really think there is even a debate here. I haven't read anyone's post who has given a negative opinion, or even a criticism of any kind.

I think everyone here appreciates both solid and display casebacks and it simply comes down to what the builder felt like using on a given build and whether or not they cared to showcase the movement or not.

It all depends on the beauty of the movement.
In my opinion more practical Solid.
