I wouldn't touch anything euro with a thousand foot pole.

American is a little better, five hundred foot pole.

Engineering, cost of maintenance and reliability all go to Japan. Honda/Toyota and Acura/Lexus respectively have never let me down. A lot of people are probably scared away from Acura and Lexus because they are premium luxury companies but a lot of the parts are interchangable with their economy counterparts which makes the parts super cheap. As long as you dont get the dealership to do repairs, maintenance is usually really cheap. When it comes to trim you might run into expensive parts, but that's the cost of luxury.

Go to the rockauto website and do some browsing of common regular maintenance parts before you settle on a vehicle. If an alternator or water pump seems stupidly expensive (even from a company who has extremely competitive pricing) then you are probably looking at a vehicle that will be a nightmare to own.

Yeah I think your right about Honda going down hill. As much as I love our family vehicle (Acura MDX). The damn thing has always been plagued with electrical gremlins. It's still a great vehicle but not exactly the glory days of the old Honda civics. I have owned civics ranging from the early 90s to early 2000's and they were all amazing. This MDX is the newest and most unreliable Honda product I've ever owned.

Toyota/Lexus for the win then. I haven't owned any of their newer vehicles but I am not surprised and will take your word for it. I daily drive a Lexus LS and I absolutely love it.

Investing in an electric vehicle right now is down right silly... The technology is in it's infantcy to say the least. In 5 or 10 years the electric vehicles will be putting everything today to shame.

What I really want to see is a company that makes bulletproof and cutting edge retrofitting kits. Kits that can convert any vehicle into an EV. If I could convert my 85 Toyota 4runner into a long range electric, I would be a very happy camper (shameless pun intended).

I have had really good luck with my euro cars over the years, And the little tidbits work till the end. Ash’s folks are Toyota devotees, they have had 4 new ones from car to suv since I have known them, each has been ridiculous to maintain $$$, parts cost crazy, and failure of normal functionality. I understand that maybe is not the norm but that is my first hand experience. Aside from that the only suv that is even remotely in my price range from toy is the 4 runner and it doesn’t have the tow capacity I need.

Maybe I am being unrealistic with my criteria, or I should just get a f250 4 door and be done but again way out of my price range with out a monthly payment

I should probably just restore my classic and use that... just a thought

i know, funny how such a machine can just make you smile! i have not always gone with the most practical choices, but have always done my own maintenance work, and really been lucky! as cars get more advanced and require computers to work on them, my knowledge decreases, mechanical i am fine, the other systems... i worry about.
once we rid ourselves of the 3 cars something will pop up, i just want to get a head start, i tend to keep cars for 100k or more so i want to make sure i have done my due diligence in research.

I've always loved those land cruiser derivatives. But my love for 4wds ended up with a mega cruiser as a dream and a Suzuki Jimmy in reality. If I could afford I would buy a Toyota Sequoia just for convenience and security reasons not for my vintage love. Now I just own a Subaru XV, not so cool but still convenient and safe in cold winter days with its Nokian tyres. I'd very much love have one of those Land Cruiser 70s though
