5J22-0D30 Auto Relay

Post by doobs »

Hey there,

I got this off the 'bay in June to accompany my Diver's, Coutura and Arktura kinetics:

Image

Nice watch, worked well. For a while.

That was all fine and well until recently it completely stopped holding a charge.

I use a Sonicare toothbrush charger to charge my other kinetics so tried it with this one as well. The watch will start when on the charger, but it never charges. The case gets slightly warm to the touch like my other kinetics do. Taking the watch off the charger results in it stopping.

I've changed the battery/capacitor in the Coutura, so I bought a battery and installed it. No difference in behavoir.

I gave it the shake-shake-shake motion for an extended while yesterday and it ran for about 10 minutes.

Any thoughts about reviving the thing?

I found this repair detail: 5J22 Movement and I have neither the skills or the tools to even begin to attempt this.

There is a new 5J22 movement on the 'bay for $95 + shipping. While I'd rather not drop another $100+ into the watch, it would be nice to have a watch that is accurate more than twice a day.

After an extended shake-shake-shake session this morning, it's not running other than after a good shake.

I'm calling it dead.

Other than the above referenced bay listing, anywhere else to get a replacement movement?

Thanks!

Chris

Dunno. All I know at this juncture is it's a 5J22 movement. I'll pull the back off and check.

It's on the downside of the capacitor/battery. It's most likely the 3023 5MY capacitor/battery. Two screws, no soldering and you are done.

I think it is this one, 3023 5MY.

It's like a generator in a car and the battery has a certain life span. I know that Seiko calls it a capacitor, but it is a rechargeable battery.
From the beginning the life span was a couple of years, perhaps even three or four, these days it is ten to fifteen thanks to lithium batteries.
Mind that it takes a lot more effort to charge these than a conventional automatic movement.

H'mmm.

What I got was a 3023 24X:

Which shows the same battery s the 2023 5MY:

The 3023 24X definitely didn't come with the screws, insulator or cover plate. I reused the existing.

All that doesn't change the fact that it's not charging the battery.

This is the movement:

So, it's a 5J22A movement.

Any thoughts of sourcing a replacement?

Thanks

3023 24X has only one "wing" and I believe that you need two like the 3023 5MY to close the circuit. How does the old one look? It depends on the battery pocket in the movement.

H'mmm.

The battery I got was exactly like the battery that was in it.

Image

And the cover doesn't look anything like the 3023 5MY one:

Image

The 5J22A movement on e-bay looks more like my version:

Image

I measured the voltage on the battery and it was 1.4vdc.

I'm seriously confuzzled at this point.

Ok.

Well then the battery that I removed was the wrong one. It's entirely possible the watch just ran out of charge and stopped.

:(

I'll order the 3023 5MY.

Thanks!
