In "down periods" I often try to take care of some of my own watches and clocks.
This time I looked at the French 1804 table clock from my grandfather and grandmother.
I never really understood the problem before I focused on the pendulum spring, it has been replaced and it is too short. I backed the Brocot adjustment device completely and now it is running perfectly, I will have to adjust the movement by lowering or lifting the pendulum weight instead.
I never could wrap my head around the issue it has had since it was with a watchmaker before it came to me in 2005. It was in fact mine since my grandfather passed 1977, but my aunt took care of it for me as long as I hadn't settled for good and I let her be the custodian for the rest of her life. After all she grew up with it and deserved to enjoy it for as long as she wanted.
I did start with a service when I got it, but it wasn't enough and the 8 day movement would stop after a few minutes.....
Happy now. I know what the issue is and I can buy a new pendulum spring later on.

great you could figure out the problem, I hope you will find a spare part

Thank you! I think that I knew, my brain had a hunch without me knowing it, but it took me a good while to get around to fix it.
It was made 1804 in Paris by Charles Hour, good name for a watchmaker, so it was already 115 years old when my grandfather bought it for my grandmother. Now it is 217 years old, no wear yet. Pretty amazing, I guess that it must be because it has been well taken care of.

What a treasure! The story behind it takes it far beyond what it is as an antique. You must be singing (at least inside) now you figured out the problem... I would. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you guys! It is a belter, 30 cm high and the base is 25 cm x 14 cm. Guilt bronze and white Carrera marple.
Almost 10 kilo.
I have been admiring this clock since I was a little boy, so I am happy to have it here now. Who would have known that I some day would be the one who serviced it and made it run again.

There is nothing like a piece with history and personal heritage.
It must have been very satisfying to see her running again.
