"Confession"

I have this wrist watch from an old friend who passed a few years ago, way too early.

His family wanted me to have his watch and I did a complete overhaul and made it look and work like it was made yesterday.

He used to use this very nice after shave and the strap still smells as if he took off the watch a few minutes ago.

So, call it fetishism or longing, I pick it up once or twice a day just to smell the strap. I remember him clearly and think of all the good laughs we had, dinners, that we talked about this and that, drank a glass of wine or a beer or two, listened to music on analog equipment or sat in his wine cellar and discussed wine and cigars.

He was my mentor and I feel he is with me still.

Crazy? Perhaps. I miss him either way.

These small mementos are tactile memories of our loved ones.

I wear my grandfather’s watch on special family occasions and it’s quite special to me in similar ways.

I have a similar situation as well.

I do have my grandfather's watch, but the thing that reminds me of him the most is a couple of ammo straps that I purchased a couple of years ago. They were made using old surplus ak47 leather slings. Coincidentally they smell exactly like my grandfather's sail boat that he lived on. He was a real life swashbuckler, and I miss him greatly. The strap maker insists that he hasn't added anything besides beeswax to the leather, but the smell is perfect. It's like a combination of diesel, kognak and old leather.

That smell...

Priceless.
