I'm hoping to get some input from the more experienced on what would be a good beginning set of tools for someone wanting to get his feet wet making straps. I'm looking at some kits on Amazon, etc., but I was thinking this is the place to ask. What are the essentials?
Thanks for any help...
Dave

The basics:
Cutting surface, like a self healing mat.
A very sharp blade.
Steel ruler, 30cm is fine.
Kind of optional: Skiving knife. I'd recommend a Japanese style knife.
To make the tang holes:
Rotary hole punch and optionally some hollow punches for marking holes before punching through with the rotary.
Or
Hollow punches and a mallet. The cheap hollow punches from eBay are shit so get brand name ones.
If you want to stitch your strap:
Hole punching tool set (1, 2 and 4 prong set will do) and cheap ones from eBay will do fine. 4mm spacing might be a good choice.
Saddler's needles.
Optionally, If you want to stitch in a groove then get a groover and an over stitch wheel.

If I was still making straps regularly I'd buy this in a heartbeat:
