This, though, is a real 618 like vintage P (non-Elinvar) and is a steal at its current price.
True, but I think this one is going sky high.I tried to bid and I can tell you the reserve price of a current bidder(s) is already much higher.

I hate ugly movements, this one leaves me cold. For $50, yes. History of Rolex and Panerai means nothing to me. Wait, I am in the wrong forum now...LOL!

Yes,you have a point, but imagine someone who is getting this one to make a "real" thing with it.Those movements are rare and with a genuine dial and a good quality case, this might end up on an auction sometime in the future.Grey area and all...

I didn't think about that, I stand corrected, although I agree with erlendh that it's close. Those Eaton Quarter of Century watches usually go above 1k,I'd say this one is more valuable. It will be interesting to see the end price.

So for those of us a bit behind on 616/618 history ... the proper RLX 618 in vintage P would say "17 jewels"?
I may need to take a short read over on the periscope site?

These movements have been seen in some Panerai watches, but there is debate about whether they originally came from pocketwatches. My guess is that Panerai wouldn't have used them; it wouldn't have been hard to get replacement parts for the correct original 618 movements (Cort 616 movements have all the parts you need). Sadly, I bet the fate of this pocketwatch is that some Paneristi will take out the movement to complete a watch and claim it is original.

Indeed, there is still some profit to be made in the twilight zone of vintage Panerai. I share your hypothesis.
