Buying advice for a lathe

Hello everyone,

Start reading George Daniels book and made me think on making a crazy stuff, build a module over a 6497 for retrograde minutes hand. I've made some drawings and know I've started searching for a lathe.

I'm thinking on a second hand with the proper tools or accessories to make wheels, screws and so on.

This will be at least a 1 year project. Don't know if I would make it but without trying I'll never know and we only have on life, so I need to try.

Buying a lathe can be a hit and miss. First of all, stay away from the 6 mm lathes, accessories and parts are not easy to find these days and it is an obsolete type.

If you're looking for a vintage, then the 8 mm is the best.

G. Boley made great lathes, so did Boley & Leinen and Lorch & Schmidt.

I am sure that there are others, Marshall, Hamilton, perhaps even Star.

Stay away from everything from India and Asia, it will not last long.

The absolute most important part is that the headstock is straight and there is no wear to the bearings.

You will need a pretty large assortment of accessories for your plans and a good motor.

I bought a complete Lorch & Schmidt lathe marked Longines for $400 around 10 years ago, I guess I was lucky.

I already had in my mind the 8mm (only found parts for this size) and away from India and Asia.

I was thinking on buying a Lorch but lets see what I can find. And yes I'll need a bunch of accessories to achieve this.

Does anyone knows a trustful site to buy secondhand lathes? I’m excluding eBay, local sites can work too

Does anyone have some unfo regarding Boley 2 BE lathe? Found some info on web but personal experience would be better...
Found one on local ad site, about 700 euro, has both levers and a me threaded handwheels.. Here are some pics

No personal experience, but it looks powerful.
