Interesting conversation Thursday evening.

Post by Yoda »

I have this friend who is representing two high end Swiss watch houses here in Sweden. He is a watchmaker, but has become an AD (authorized dealer) a few years ago.

We were having dinner Thursday evening and of course we talked about watches as usual. I always welcome opinions and I asked him the old question/"riddle": "gen, fake, copy, homage and so on". He knows about our site and he has seen what we do here, he is quite impressed. He once said that he would love to be a member here, but he would loose his position as a dealer for the these watch houses if they found out. Good enough.

His answer was something I haven't seen in that way until now, probably because I didn't think of the meaning of the word.

He knows that I build and he has of course seen what I have done and can do, he also knows that I have an Angelus parts cabinet in my shop.

He mentioned that and with that in mind he answered the question like this: "thinking of your question and if we concentrate on building a watch movement with gen parts, replica. A replica is often as good as the gen product, sometimes even better! The only difference is that Angelus or P*****i didn't pay you to build this movement" End of discussion.

I find it interesting and it makes good sense to me.

There is something truly unique and special about this hobby and this forum in particular.

There are counterfeiters who only care about money and trying to fool people. They are rotten...

Then there are people, modest people who simply apretiate the legends, the aesthetics, the patina, the heart and souls of these milestones in the history of horology. People that have spent countless hours honing their skills and perfecting the art of bringing these masterpieces to life. Not so they can fool people or make disshonest money, but just because they appretiate them so very much and wan't to be able to hold a peice of history in their hands that didn't cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars. Then it went to the next level and became an extremely helpful community where everyone pooled their resources and provided their diverse range of talents. Now anyone with the interest and the passion needs to simply join the community and they too can peice together a work of art with the help of the many masters here.

I really love this appretiate this place. It is most certainly a wonderful anomaly in the world of watchmaking. It is a shame however, that it would tarnish someone's reputation to participate here. There is true irony in that.

Oups! This is how it works, you got to choose side in certain matters. I told him that a long time ago.

It is because of the trademark thing, the big makers will go far to stop it.

I'm actually quite torn about this. Although i feel that the current panerai doesnt quite deserve to have exclusive rights over its history, how the original paneral was taken over (felt like it was taken advantage of) and how the brand was treated during the early days by members of richmont group (the cazzomir reference). The current owners dont seem to know or care enough about the brand that they are exploiting for profit. But this is business and the law. The brand was bought over for good consideration and that is what it is...

So applying the trade marks of panerai on our homage watches may give rise to legal issues and the craftsmen of our forum who do so must exercise great caution not to give too much about themselves away.

I am so impressed and amazed by the level of dedication and effort our craftsmen put into understanding the details of the brands we homage, replicating as closely as possible the methods of those historical times, when the brand owners have already abandoned those methods in their pursuit for profit.

Another aspect of this forum that i admire is how vintage movements have been repurposed.

Due to the use of panerai and rolex marks, i fear the forum may fall into danger and i hope that everyone play safe and cautious.

Hf is populated with serious enthusiasts who could take any one in terms of skill and knowledge. If we had access to factory equipment the entire industry under pressure!
