We had a discovery 4 until recently changing for Volvo XC90. I’d avoid, in our case anyway... we spent thousands on what seems to be normal issues.

Are you interested in oldtimers until 1990, or classics from 1990

if i could afford the 2 door classic i would have it! i just love it! but i do not thing its piratical for daily use. so like 2010 is the target year for the rover so i have read.

i always here that! but my friend with Toyota spends several thousand on them a year too. i think it is just normal now. most of the maintenancei can do, the electronics are what scare me.

Mercedes G?
i have not looked at the G but i wouldn't hesitate on the Mercedes, the old wagon has been the most trouble free car i have ever had!
TimemiT wrote: May 17th, 2019, 9:54 pm Joe are you pulling a heavy sailboat/boats? ... seems you need something with heavy duty drive train and torque
yes, that is part of the problem, not far mind you and on flats but it needs to be able to do that, and drag a moto or two all day long, i would just buy one of those 4 door pick up's it would be the perfect thing kinda everything all rolled up, but they are so freaking expensive!
jiminpotomac wrote: May 17th, 2019, 8:20 pm I miss our old Range Rover. Epsom green over tan leather. 1999. Bought it for my wife and we drove it everywhere, through everything. Sold it with 200k miles on it to my nephew who daily drives it still. It had the 4.0l V8. I really, really miss it.

that is the p38? i love that body, and it should last for ever if it doesn't over heat.. maybe i should just restore the classic and be done with it.

Dear Joe! I think the Land Rover is the most elegant and cool of all cars mentioned...
I guess its important to know if you are planning to drive long trips also...and how important is confort...
If main use for it is going to be pulling your boats around the Toyota is for sure also and option. I have owned an FJ40 for many years and it is literally unbreakable fun and cool also...
Keep in mind Land Rover has many other models that might fit your needs also in the price range and being newer models (like the discoveries or the Freelander’s, although not as classic, maybe better for daily use...

But for sure the car you were showing us in the picture it’s truly AMAZING!
Hereby a couple of pics of my Toyota.
Hugs and positive energy.

Boy that fjwould have been the envy of my friends in shool! I had a Porsche and wasn’t as cool as the guys with the fj’s!
That is a fantastic example!

I keep coming back to the rover full size for a few reasons not the least of which is I just want one, but I am constantly helping my friend at the marina pull his 3ton trailer around, the motor boat has to be towed around a few times a year same as the sail boat, I drag the bikes up to my parents in the mountains about 7 hrs each way a couple times a year, (the old merc wagon hates that trip!) I am familiar with them and the off road capabilities are unbelievable, which is important when you live in a bog... that said I know full well the issues with them, but after searching a bit for one and seeing how many are around with over 200k I feel ok about it. My old classic which was reportedly one of the worst cars ever for maintenance short of a sabb never left me stranded but I do preventive maintenance and take good care of my toys.
I had a disco for a min first generation, now that was a piece of shit!
I would do a P38 rover if I could fine
D a clean one, but most are trashed at this point, it isn’t an everyday car but will be used regularly, with the shop being at the house now there won’t be anymore commuter trips, short trips tend to kill cars.

Anyway, I am still open to suggestions.
