Hello forum!

Post by lupo »

Hi friends,
New guy here.
Found the forum years ago, but never joined. After 25+ years of watch collecting, I got a bit bored and started building simple watches from parts available online. 3 months in, already on my 4th project. I can take apart, clean, oil and put back together a simple ETA movement, as I did many times before, but I am far from a good.

As a gen collector - enthusiast, Im into fantasy builds or homages. I do not want rolex or panerai written on my watches, well... only on those from A.D. :)
BUT: I am NO watch snob, I love my Seikos as much as I love my Rolexes. I choose a Bulova Lunar Pilot any day over my Speeeedmaster. And yes, I also did spend my money on a QUARTZ (!!!) Omega. On two - to be precise. In fact, I LOVE quartz!
I guess I just stopped giving a flying "duck" about trends and watch influencers. Or maybe I am just old.

Aaanyway. I just wanted to say "hello", I did interact with some of you already. You seem to be good company.

Once I figure out how to post pictures, I will show you how my China builds are going.

See ya!

Lupo.

Hi Lupo,
Welcome to HF.

You won't be disappointed here.

I can understand that you only prefer original watches. There are many like you. Nothing bad.

There are (at least) two „opinions“, those who reject counterfeit/replica/homage watches and those who (even) love them.

In the Panerai world, things are a little different.
1.) if you recreate a good historical vintage Oanerai, then many (<5%) will have difficulty identifying it as not genuine... (counterfeits have even been auctioned off as genuine).
2.) who has ever held a historical Panerai in their hand!?! I am from the Panerai fraction "make one and show it". So far the reactions have been positive and on top of that the watch was made by me. wWhich I do not even hide

At the latest now the long conversations start, „how great“, „how did you make this“, „I would like one too etc“...

Anyway, enjoy your hobby, enjoy your watches.

Not that I care that much. Everyone should be wearing whatever they like. I'm not a huge fan of replicas, but I don't mind homages.
I have this theory: why fool myself? (and the people around) - If I don't have the funds for a Paul Newman, so be it.. I can easy live with that. So many other nice watches to pick from. I love watches. Cheap or expensive. I enjoy a glass of good whiskey with a Cohiba as well as a simple coffee from a beaten-up mug in the morning in the garage. Life is short. We should enjoy whatever makes us happy. We people in general have this tendency to worry too much about unimportant stuff. Hobbies like this keep us happy and entertained. Even the wife was kinda proud when I showed her my creation: LOOK. ME. BUILD. WATCH.

Funny thing: literally NOBODY EVER noticed a 16520 or the 226570. But when I walked last week into the office wearing my China 47mm Luminor on this beauty of MT Straps - brown "74" vintage strap: I got this "OMG what is that?" from 3 people in one day.

Love this hobby.
