I just found out via Watchuseek that Dr. Roland Ranfft died on 19th March this year. Im sure a lot of us in the watch building community knew his website database Ranfft.de, the best resource available for looking up watch movement specifications and information. Dr. Ranfft was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, and although I didn’t know him personally his work was instrumental in my pursuit of watch building. I likely would have never even started building watches if it wasn’t for him.
There is an online memorial here:

Some of the members at Watchuseek were able to save a copy of the database and are working to have it up and running soon:

You will be missed Dr. Ranfft.

Such sad news! His site had been an absolutely invaluable resource for so many aspiring watchmakers. He was also very active on watchuseek, chiming in with his encyclopedic knowledge and helping so many people. What a great guy, what a terrible loss to the community.
