So you want to build a 240 homage

Post by Tanukjaju »

I thought I would share some of the common / not so common issues faced when building a build with a 240. I’ve had a few members reach out who have encounter different issues over the last few months… here is a list

1). Stem to mainplate offset. The movement has a higher offset compared to a 649x. It’s in the neighborhood of 2.2-2.4mm. I forget the exact number.

For those that use a 6497/8 case modern style case:

Solution: machine the bezel rehaut to accommodate the depth or find a case that is meant for a thicker 6496 dial and adjust with a thinner dial.

2). Xx sent the wrong spacer…

The main plate for 240s come in 2 sizes

3). The movement stops when it’s in the watch

The teeth on the spring barrel just stick out beyond the back plate and can cause the movement to stop after a few mins of running. It’s hard to see… but if your spacer isn’t set up with this consideration, you will encounter this issue. In this pic. You can just barely see the teeth sticking out.

I will add to this as I get questions or if people have questions regarding 240 builds or quirks of the 240 movement.

Arrow pointing at one of the teeth. You can see a few more exposed teeth above and below. Photo taken from top dead center

Love this post. The barrel teeth tip is huge! When my 240 gets back from the spa, first thing I'm going to do is check that with my mvmt ring
