Today’s new arrival...

Post by atkin68 »

I don’t know anything about this movement other than that it looks awesome. Bought as “not running” - but it only needed the stem set screw tightened. Then it wound up smoothly and is running strong. Alas, too big for any case I have at 41.6mm - I may have to get another 60mm Egi to find a home for it.

Looks nice and clean - any idea of the power reserve?

No, can't find anything on this movement. There are three Pelican movements on Ranfft, but none are remotely like this one. The watch it came out of had an unbranded dial, and I see no markings on the movement apart from "Pelican" and what appears to be a serial number - 108163. I've had it running about 16 hours.

I looked in my books and it appears that Pelican is the model/grade name, the movement was made by J. Roth and Cie.

Thank you Yoda . It seems interesting that there are no markings anywhere on the ebauche to indicate the mfg. Not even "swiss".

That's not very unusual really, many of these small firms didn't mark their movements, especially not when they were made for someone else.
In this case it was made by the maker and sold with their own name on it.
It appears to be made for selling outside Switzerland, it is marked both "A" and "R" plus "F" and "S" on the balance cock.

Even if it is running great, service would be the best to avoid wear.

@yoda - while poking around in the ranfft archive this morning, I inadvertently stumbled upon this:

http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db. ... &Unitas_30

Scrolling down to the 3rd and 4th images, I'm nearly convinced this is a Unitas 30. The bridge markings also match. I'm pretty excited about this find. I felt from the beginning that this movement reminded me of my 6431 - had the look and feel of a Unitas.
